How much of a mine's electricity load can renewables actually offset?
Around 20 to 30 per cent renewable penetration is straightforward on most mine sites without heavy investment in batteries or stabilising technology. Michael Day explains what changes beyond that point and why 80 per cent is achievable with the right investment.

So working out the maximum amount of renewables that you can put into a mine site is a common question that we get from mining companies. Typically 20 to 30% renewables is quite easy to achieve without substantial investment in batteries and stabilizing technologies. Beyond that the need for larger batteries and more engineering and more work comes in. 80% is highly achievable, but it does require that additional investment in the batteries and the network stability.
